Lionsgate has released the first trailer for Above the Below, a survival thriller co-directed by and starring Idris Elba. The film opens in theaters December 4, 2026, per Dark Horizons. Rotten Tomatoes lists it as a limited release.
The trailer shows three astronauts surviving a destructive re-entry and crash-landing in the ocean, where their capsule begins to sink with oxygen running low. They must decide who will risk reaching the surface and who stays behind with the wreckage, according to Lionsgate’s synopsis.
Elba plays Jackson, Caitlin FitzGerald plays Brooks and Hero Fiennes Tiffin plays Rhodes, per FirstShowing. Elba co-directs with Martin Owen from a script by Elizabeth Morris, Matthew Mitchell and Vicki Sargent. Gina Carter and Matt Williams produce.
Elba has said the film was made as practically as possible. The cast learned to hold their breath for several minutes, and a full-size spacecraft was built and submerged for the shoot, per Dark Horizons.
