Paramount Is Developing a Live-Action Cyberpunk 2077 Movie

Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached, with CD Projekt Red co-producing.

Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, based on CD Projekt Red's best-selling role-playing game. Deadline broke the news on October 8. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, whose credits include the Transformers and G.I. Joe films, is attached to produce alongside CD Projekt Red, the Polish studio that owns the franchise.

Deadline reports the movie will tell a new story in the same universe rather than simply retelling the game. Dark Horizons notes it won't necessarily be a direct recreation of the game's plot. That is the approach Netflix took with the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. No director, cast or release date has been announced, and it is unclear whether Keanu Reeves, who plays rocker Johnny Silverhand in the game, will appear.

The game is set in Night City, a megacity run by corporations such as Arasaka, where a mercenary called V is implanted with a chip carrying Johnny Silverhand's consciousness. Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, and its expansion Phantom Liberty has sold 15 million.

The film is Paramount's third major video game adaptation in development. Street Fighter, which the studio is co-producing with Legendary, opens on October 16, and a Call of Duty film directed by Peter Berg is set for 2028. Gizmodo credits Sony's Resident Evil for helping make game adaptations popular again, and you can read about its box office run in our holdovers report.

Paramount is also in the middle of a much bigger story, as it completed its merger with Warner Bros. Discovery this week. You can read about that in our report on the merger.
