Tom Cruise's Digger Is Being Pulled From Theaters as Warner Bros. Retreats

The film is losing its IMAX screens and most regular ones after just two weekends in release.

Warner Bros. is pulling Digger from a large number of theaters. Showbiz411 reported on October 13 that the studio would remove the Tom Cruise film from most prominent locations after Wednesday, October 14, with a fuller retreat on Thursday, October 15.

According to Showbiz411, the film is being removed entirely from places such as Times Square in Manhattan, and it is losing its IMAX screens and most regular screens. One Upper West Side screen will keep a VistaVision print because the studio installed projection hardware there. The report is based on theater schedules in Manhattan, downtown Chicago and the New York suburbs, and says the film was on 3,321 screens.

The IMAX loss came a week earlier. Collider reported on October 11 that Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, was being pulled from IMAX venues after one week, with Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey returning to digital IMAX and IMAX 70mm screens.

The numbers explain the retreat. The Daily Beast reports the film opened to $8 million domestic and $20 million worldwide, then reached $14.4 million domestic and $35.3 million worldwide after its second weekend. Deseret News says ticket sales fell 60% in the second weekend. The Daily Beast says Digger is on track to lose about $245 million and finish near $50 million worldwide, against a break-even point that Variety puts near $350 million and Warner Bros. puts at $300 million.

Production costs were estimated at $160 million to $180 million, with about $100 million more for marketing, according to Variety as cited by Deseret News. For our earlier coverage of the film's box office, read our report on the Digger second-weekend loss.
