The account lives at venmo.com/u/EBENEZERmovie, per Cosmic Book News, and was announced by the film's official X account. In a 29-second launch video, a fan requests $500 labeled “student loans.” Scrooge pays back one cent with the note “Generosity has its limits,” according to ComingSoon and Cosmic Book News.

ComingSoon reports that fans can send requests but that Scrooge answers with a penny. Variety's headline asked whether the account was real and described a profile that “looks to be accepting money but not dishing it out.”

Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol is a Paramount Pictures release directed by Ti West from a screenplay by Nathaniel Halpern. Johnny Depp plays Scrooge, with Rupert Grint, Tramell Tillman, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Charlie Murphy and Ian McKellen, per ComingSoon.

The film opens in theaters on November 13, about three weeks after the Venmo account launched.
