Grok Imagine posted the episode on X late Friday afternoon, October 23, and offered to share a full breakdown of how it was made if viewers ask. Wonder Studios posted, “Homer didn’t have Grok… we do.” Mashable describes the project as the first of several planned episodes.
The release follows a promise Elon Musk made in July that Grok Imagine would produce a full-length Odyssey movie before the end of the year that was “historically accurate and true to the art of Homer,” per Mashable. Musk has also criticized Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, mainly over historical accuracy and casting, and said in February that Nolan had “lost his integrity.”
Mashable’s review of the episode points to common generative AI flaws, including unnatural teeth, odd hair texture and smudgy skin, and calls the writing weak and the characters hard to tell apart. It notes that Odysseus is the only named character and that every character is white.
Grok Imagine previously ran a contest with a $100,000 prize for the best Odyssey depiction made on its platform. Digital Camera World reports that the winner, Nem Perez, submitted a five-minute entry centered on Nausicaa and the Phaeacians, and that the entry showed visible anomalies, including a cyclops with three eyes, per Futurism.
Nolan’s The Odyssey opened to $124.5 million in July and had grossed more than $1.7 billion worldwide, according to Mashable. The film arrives on digital platforms on November 17. Nolan has said that the idea of generative AI replacing human creativity is nonsense, per the same report.
