HBO’s Harry Potter series represents an investment of more than $200 million for season 1, according to TheWrap. The report, published October 23, is based on filings from Plum Jam Productions, the HBO-owned company that produces the show.
TheWrap puts the initial setup at about $200 million (roughly £150 million) and says the figure is derived from earnings filings and may not capture full production costs. It reports that episodic budgets are “on par with” HBO’s House of the Dragon and The Last of Us.
For comparison, TheWrap notes the first Harry Potter film reportedly had a $125 million budget. Its per-episode estimates are about $15 million for the final season of Game of Thrones, $15 million to $20 million for House of the Dragon and $10 million to $15 million for The Last of Us.
Winter Is Coming, citing a report from The Times, says production costs reached £147.4 million (nearly $200 million) by the end of 2025, roughly halfway through production, and that filming continued until May 2026. That outlet projects a final budget above $250 million, or about $31.25 million per episode across eight episodes, which would surpass Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($250 million), the most expensive Wizarding World film.
The series premieres on Christmas Day on HBO and HBO Max, per TheWrap. It is planned for seven seasons, each adapting one book, and only two seasons are officially greenlit.
