In a Violent Nature: Part 2 will open in theaters on February 12, 2027, Valentine's Day weekend. Ry Barrett, who plays the masked killer Johnny, announced the date with a surprise appearance at Shudder's panel at New York Comic Con on Saturday. The film comes from Independent Film Company and Shudder.
The date puts the sequel about four months out, according to Fangoria, and it places a slasher sequel on a holiday weekend usually associated with romance. IFC and Shudder describe the movie as the highly anticipated follow-up to a breakout horror hit, and the studios say it will arrive exclusively in theaters.
A Premiere That Was Kept Secret
Audiences did not have to wait for the release announcement to see the film. The sequel had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest last month, where it played as the festival’s first secret midnight screening on September 18, according to ScreenAnarchy. Bloody Disgusting reports that the version shown was a work print of the locked picture, meaning the cut was finished even though final polish was still to come.
The surprise format added to the buzz around the film. Roger Ebert’s site noted that rumors had circulated at the festival that the sequel was complete and ready to be unleashed, and the screening turned those rumors into reality for the Austin crowd.
Where the Story Picks Up
According to Fangoria, the sequel picks up immediately where the first film ends. Johnny arrives at an Ontario summer camp, where a young outcast camper is forced to spend the night with his counselor sister and her friends at their end-of-season party. Dread Central’s review describes the central figure as a troubled 14-year-old, and an Italian report from TecnoAndroid describes Barrett’s character as the undead firefighter who spreads panic among the camp’s young people during that party.
For viewers who have not seen the 2024 film, the original followed a killer resurrected as a vengeful spirit in search of a locket buried with his body, told largely from the killer’s point of view. IFC and Shudder say the new chapter expands on the killer’s lore while pushing the possibilities of extreme kills even further.
The Point-of-View Question
The most debated detail is the camera. Deadline reports the sequel keeps the first film’s first-person view of the killer, and DiscussingFilm likewise described the film as shot from the killer’s perspective when the date was announced. Festival reviews, however, tell a different story. Bloody Disgusting’s review says the sequel drops the unique angle of the original while keeping its violent kills, silent stretches of stomping through the woods and lack of a conventional score. Dread Central likewise found that the directors took a more conventional approach this time, and Inverse called it the same slow-walking formula as the first film.
Because the festival screening was a work print, final marketing and the theatrical cut may clarify how much of the film is told from Johnny’s point of view. For now, reports from the premiere and the studio’s own description do not fully agree.
Mixed Reaction, Strong Kill Count
Reviews from Fantastic Fest have been split, with nearly all of them agreeing that the kills are the main attraction. Bloody Disgusting’s critic wrote that the directors top the memorable yoga-pose kill from the original and add several more crowd-pleasing moments for horror fans. Dread Central called the film a shocking crowd pleaser packed with gore.
Other critics were less certain. Pop Heist found it bigger, funnier and gorier than its predecessor but said it was unclear that it is better. Roger Ebert’s site said the filmmakers sacrificed some of the original’s distinctive atmosphere in favor of inventive kills, and Daily Dead described more impressive kills but little substance, faulting how the young lead was written and directed. Inverse summed up the sequel as bloodier but not necessarily better. Reported cast members include Barrett, Lucas Nguyen and Olivia Scriven, per Pop Heist.
The Filmmakers and the Producers
The film is co-directed by Nate Wilson and Chris Nash, who also wrote the script. Nash directed the 2024 original, which premiered in Sundance’s Midnight program and earned about $4.5 million worldwide. The producers are Peter Kuplowsky, Shannon Hanmer and Nash. The Movie Waffler called Nash’s first film one of the best slasher movies in decades and described the sequel as the inevitable result of its success, with Wilson taking over directing duties while Nash provides the script.
The sequel was announced shortly after the original’s success in 2024, and a first trailer followed in February 2026, according to The Movie Waffler. Bloody Disgusting later published a new poster that uses Johnny’s signature hook to spell out the release date.
Release Plans
IFC and Shudder announced that the film will open in theaters nationwide, according to ScreenAnarchy. The original premiered in the Midnight section at Sundance before reaching audiences, and the sequel’s path began instead with a secret midnight screening at Fantastic Fest. Studio materials describe the film as an exclusive theatrical release on February 12, 2027, and the studios have not yet announced a streaming date.
