John Cena Reacts to Peacemaker Man of Tomorrow Rumors: He Hasn't Heard Anything

Cena says he and James Gunn talk regularly, but this rumor was news to him.

John Cena says he has not heard that Peacemaker is appearing in Man of Tomorrow. Asked about the rumor on a red carpet by Screen Rant, Cena responded, “When did he say this?”, according to Netflix Junkie.

The rumor has a basis. James Gunn has described Peacemaker Season 2 as a prequel to Man of Tomorrow, saying its events lead into the Superman sequel. Cena said he and Gunn talk often, even trading merman emojis inspired by the show.

Cena has addressed the idea before. In a GQ interview, he said he could care less about being Gunn’s second choice for the role, which Gunn first wrote for Dave Bautista, according to SuperHeroHype. That report adds that Cena may appear in the sequel.

Man of Tomorrow has finished principal photography. Cena’s next announced project is Matchbox: The Movie, an Apple film directed by Sam Hargrave.

Where the Rumor Came From

The speculation began in early September 2025, when Gunn announced the title and July 9, 2027 release date for the next film in his Superman saga. In the same period, he promoted a new episode of the HBO Max series with a post telling viewers to watch the “Man of Tomorrow prequel,” meaning the second season of Peacemaker. He later said the season would lead directly into the movie. Fans took the wording as a hint that Peacemaker, or at least the events that surround him, would carry into the film, even though Gunn also said he would not force cameos that the story does not need.

The connection already has a precedent. Cena’s Christopher Smith made a short appearance in the 2025 film Superman, which established that the character exists in the same continuity as David Corenswet’s Clark Kent. With Lex Luthor also expected back in the sequel, viewers have looked for any thread that might tie the series to the next movie.

What the Season Set Up

The second season of Peacemaker premiered on August 21, 2025, and ran for eight episodes. It was the first DCU series to follow the events of the new Superman film, and it was widely discussed as a bridge to the larger universe being built by DC Studios. Gunn has said the finale is where the strongest links to Man of Tomorrow appear. Because of that, Cena’s uncertainty is notable. He plays one of the central characters in the series that Gunn calls a setup, yet he says he has not been told about any role in the film.

A Familiar Pattern for Cena and Gunn

Cena and Gunn have worked together since The Suicide Squad in 2021, when Gunn cast the wrestler-turned-actor as the self-serious hero with a love of peace. Their friendship is a recurring subject in interviews. Cena has said the two stay in regular contact, which makes his surprised reaction easy to read as genuine rather than coy. The story about being second choice after Dave Bautista has also become part of the character’s legend, and Cena has treated it with good humor each time it is raised.

What Is Known About the Sequel

Man of Tomorrow returns to the story of Corenswet’s Superman and, according to early reports, pairs him against Lex Luthor in a suit powered by Kryptonite. Gunn has described it as a sequel that is not a direct continuation of the first film, and he is writing and directing it himself. The ensemble from the first movie is expected to return, and early casting reports have linked Aaron Pierre, who plays John Stewart in Lanterns, to the project. Those details are still developing, and none of them confirm a role for Peacemaker.

What Comes Next

Production on Man of Tomorrow has wrapped, so the next stages are editing, visual effects and marketing ahead of the July 2027 release. Studios often keep cameos secret until trailers or premieres, which means a final answer about Peacemaker may not arrive for months. In the meantime, Cena has other work to focus on, including Matchbox: The Movie for Apple. Until Gunn or DC Studios confirms the film’s cast list, the question remains open, and Cena’s own reaction suggests that even the star of the series is waiting to find out.
