Mayor of Kingstown returns for its fifth and final season on Paramount+ on January 15, 2027. The streamer released the date and a first-look photo on October 20, per The Hollywood Reporter. The final season has eight episodes, down from the usual ten.
What Season 5 Is About
Paramount+ describes the season as picking up after Tracy’s murder and the revenge Mike (Jeremy Renner) and Kyle (Taylor Handley) took on Callahan. FBI agent Russell Hardy (David Morse) arrives in Kingstown looking for the ‘fugitive’ Callahan and threatens to expose Mike’s secrets and disrupt the town’s balance of power.
The setup places Mike in a position he has long tried to avoid. Throughout the series he has operated as an informal power broker, someone who keeps peace between rival groups without holding any official title. An outside federal investigator searching for a man connected to the violence of the previous season puts that fragile arrangement under direct pressure, and it raises the question of how much of Mike’s world can stay hidden once an agent starts looking.
The Cast Returning for the Final Run
The cast also includes Laura Benanti, Hugh Dillon, Tobi Bamtefa and Derek Webster. Necar Zadegan, Nichole Galicia and Lennie James also return, and Paramount+ lists Edie Falco as Nina Hobbs. Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon created the series.
David Morse is a long-established character actor, widely known for his work in television and film over several decades, and his casting as a federal agent brings a veteran presence to the season’s central new conflict. Dillon’s role is also worth noting, since he is both a member of the cast and a co-creator of the show, which gives him a stake in how the story is brought to a close.
A Series Built Around a Prison Town
Mayor of Kingstown premiered on Paramount+ in November 2021 and is set in the fictional city of Kingstown, Michigan, a place whose economy depends almost entirely on its many prisons. The series follows the McLusky family, who act as intermediaries between the prison system, local law enforcement, criminal organizations and the community. Renner plays Mike McLusky, who steps into that role and spends the show trying to hold the city together while dealing with violence, corruption and personal loss.
The show comes from Sheridan, who is also known for creating other major dramas for Paramount’s platforms, and from Dillon, who helped develop the premise. Its tone is bleak and character-focused, with the prison setting shaping nearly every storyline. Because the title refers to an unofficial kind of authority rather than an elected one, the series has always been about influence and the cost of using it.
Why a Shorter Final Season
Paramount+ has confirmed that Season 5 is the end of the series, and the eight-episode order is two fewer than the usual ten. A shorter run gives the writers a tighter space in which to resolve the storylines that have built up over four seasons, including the fallout from Tracy’s murder and the pursuit of Callahan. It also signals that the final chapter is meant to be concentrated rather than extended.
Production and What Has Been Said So Far
Filming began in Pittsburgh in March, and Renner marked the end of production on June 30, according to Primetimer. During filming he teased that “No one is safe this season,” per Screen Rant.
That remark, together with the arrival of an FBI investigator and the confirmed finality of the season, suggests a story in which major consequences are expected. Paramount+ has not detailed how the series will end, and no further plot information has been released beyond the description of the new season and the first-look photo.
With a January 15, 2027 premiere date set, viewers have a little under three months before the final episodes begin to arrive, and the full run will bring the story of Mike McLusky and the people of Kingstown to its conclusion.
