Details of the Ceremony

The 36th Annual Gotham Film Awards takes place Monday, November 30, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, per Next Best Picture. Gotham Film & Media Institute Executive Director Jeffrey Sharp said of the Michael team: “Their extraordinary work captures the humanity behind one of the world's most celebrated artists.”

The Gotham Film & Media Institute is a New York-based organization that supports independent film, and its annual awards ceremony has traditionally marked the start of the film awards season. The event is known for honoring a mix of independent features, documentaries and tribute recipients, which makes the selection of a major studio release for a musical tribute a notable choice for this year’s program.

The Other Honorees

The other tributes announced are LAIKA for the Gotham Anniversary Tribute, Danny Boyle for the Gotham Director Tribute for Ink, and La Bola Negra for the Gotham Vanguard Tribute. Nominees will be announced on October 27.

Taken together, the honorees cover a broad range of filmmaking, from the animation studio LAIKA to a director with a long career and a film in the Vanguard category. The Musical Tribute adds a popular music-driven title to that group, and it places the Michael team alongside artists whose work spans animation, auteur-driven drama and emerging voices.

The Film and Its Subject

Michael is a biographical drama about Michael Jackson, one of the most influential recording artists in popular music history. The film was directed by Antoine Fuqua, with Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson cast in the title role, and it was produced by Graham King, who also produced Bohemian Rhapsody. John Logan wrote the screenplay. The casting of a family member in the lead part was one of the most discussed elements of the production, since it linked the performance directly to the artist’s own family.

Musical biopics have become a reliable draw for audiences, because they pair a familiar story with songs that viewers already know. A film about Jackson carried especially high expectations, given the scale of his career, the size of his catalog and the continued interest in his life and music across generations and around the world.

A Record-Setting Box Office Run

The Lionsgate film passed $1 billion worldwide in July, according to Celluloid Junkie, making it the highest-grossing biopic and musical biopic of all time and surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody. It is Lionsgate's first $1 billion film. Lionsgate handled the domestic release, and Universal Pictures International distributed it in most other international markets.

Bohemian Rhapsody, released in 2018, had long held the top position among musical biographies, so surpassing it marks a clear shift in the genre’s box office ceiling. For Lionsgate, an independent studio that has built its reputation on franchises and mid-budget releases, reaching the $1 billion mark for the first time is a milestone in the company’s history. The split distribution arrangement, with Lionsgate in the domestic market and Universal Pictures International in most other territories, also shows how the film reached audiences in many countries at once.

What the Tribute Signals

The Gotham Musical Tribute recognizes both the artistic and the commercial success of the film. Sharp’s comment focuses on the human side of the story, which suggests the Institute is honoring the team’s approach to its subject as much as the film’s box office performance. With the ceremony set for November 30 and nominees due on October 27, the tribute will be one of the first major awards-season events for the Michael team this year.

Why the Gotham Awards Matter

The Gotham Awards are widely watched because they arrive early in the awards calendar and often shape the conversation around which films and performers will stay in contention in the months that follow. Tribute honors are separate from the competitive categories, so they allow the Institute to recognize work that has had a broad cultural impact without placing it in direct competition with the year’s other nominees. For the cast and filmmakers of Michael, the tribute offers a public moment of recognition in New York, in front of an audience of filmmakers, producers, performers and members of the industry.
