Ready Player One is back. A full-color graphic adaptation of Ernest Cline's novel arrived October 6 as a Target-exclusive hardcover in the U.S., with wider editions following on March 2, 2027, according to Dork and Books of Brilliance.
The Creative Team and Editions
Scott Peterson adapted the book and Meredith Laxton illustrated it. Books of Brilliance reports the hardcover runs 320 pages and follows Wade Watts's hunt for Halliday's fortune and control of the OASIS in 2045. Ten Speed Graphic publishes the U.S. trade and deluxe editions, with Penguin handling the UK and Australia, per the same report.
The staggered rollout means readers have more than one way to pick up the story. The Target-exclusive hardcover came first, and the wider trade and deluxe editions follow in early 2027, giving the book a second launch window across general bookstores and international markets.
Why the Story Suits the Comics Format
Cline’s novel, first published in 2011, imagines a world in which most people escape a crumbling reality by logging into the OASIS, a vast virtual universe created by the eccentric designer James Halliday. When Halliday dies, he leaves behind a hidden Easter egg, and whoever finds it inherits his fortune and control of the OASIS itself. Wade Watts, a teenager who competes under the avatar name Parzival, becomes one of the first to make real progress, which puts him at odds with a powerful corporation determined to win the prize at any cost.
That premise is built around imagery. The book is packed with references to video games, films, music and television, many of them drawn from the 1980s, which were Halliday’s great obsession. A full-color graphic novel gives an illustrator room to show those references rather than describe them, and to draw the contrast between Wade’s cramped real-world surroundings and the sprawling, colorful worlds of the OASIS. Laxton’s artwork carries that task across the book’s 320 pages.
Adaptations also invite comparison. Steven Spielberg’s 2018 film version, which starred Tye Sheridan as Wade and Olivia Cooke as Samantha, changed a number of the novel’s challenges and plot points to suit the screen. A graphic novel built directly on the original book offers readers another look at the story as Cline first wrote it, adapted into a different visual medium.
What Is Planned for Ready Player Two
A Ready Player Two graphic novel is scheduled for 2028, according to Books of Brilliance, which cites Entertainment Weekly's April reveal.
The prose sequel, published in 2020, picks up after the events of the first book and introduces a new technology that changes how people experience the OASIS, along with another high-stakes quest. Adapting that book as a graphic novel would continue the same visual approach as the first volume, and the 2028 date gives the creative team time to complete it after the first adaptation reaches shelves worldwide.
The Film Sequel Remains in Development
The film sequel is still in early development. Screenwriter Zak Penn told The Direct in August, “I am working on it,” per Get Your Comic On. No studio, cast, director or release date has been announced. Inverse notes that Steven Spielberg's involvement is unconfirmed, and Entertainment Now says he confirmed in 2024 that he would produce but not direct.
Penn has a long history with the property. He co-wrote the screenplay for the 2018 film with Cline, so his continued work on a sequel keeps the project tied to the people who shaped the first movie. Still, the absence of an announced studio, director or cast means the project is at a very early stage, and the timeline for any new film remains open.
A Franchise Returning to Print
Taken together, the new graphic novel, the planned 2028 sequel adaptation and the ongoing film development show a franchise being revisited across several formats at once. For readers who first met Wade Watts through the novel or the film, the graphic novel offers a way back into the OASIS. For newcomers, its full-color presentation and standalone hardcover format make it an accessible entry point to a story that has already reached millions of people in print and on screen.
