A new Red Dead Redemption game could launch in 2027 or 2028, according to a Citi note. The bank said that timeline “may not be unreasonable,” GameSpot reported on October 16. It is an analyst's view, not an announcement from Rockstar Games.
Citi's note was about Grand Theft Auto VI and Rockstar, and it tied the possibility to Rockstar's claim that the game did not cost $1.5 billion to make, according to GameSpot. The report has also been tied to the idea that a new Red Dead release could ease concerns about Take-Two's earnings after GTA VI, per a Yahoo Finance headline.
GameSpot called the timeline “extremely ambitious and wishful thinking.” It noted that major Rockstar releases have historically come years apart, that the studio now has its teams work on one project at a time, and that GTA VI and GTA Online still need support.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has said long development cycles should not be confused with a “lackadaisical approach,” and that new technology could compress some timelines. Rockstar's Phil Hooker said hiring and technology updates should help future games arrive faster. GameSpot says those comments may be aimed at analysts and investors and are “just talk” for now.
Rockstar has not announced a new Red Dead game. Red Dead Redemption 2 is still drawing attention seven years after launch, and RDR2.org reports players are still finding secrets in it.
