An exhibition dedicated to the music of Ryan Coogler’s Oscar-winning Sinners opened October 20 at the California African American Museum (CAAM) in Los Angeles. Sinners: Sounds That Summon runs through March 14, according to Variety.
CAAM and Warner Bros. Archives co-organized the show, which was curated by Imani Y. Haynes. Variety describes it as the first museum exhibition devoted to a film’s music.
The exhibition is centered on the guitar used by protagonist Sammie ‘Preacher Boy’ Moore. It revisits the Club Juke sequence, in which the music links traditional African ritual to present-day street dance. Visitors will also see costumes, props and archival material, including Smoke and Stack’s costumes and the Club Juke sign.
The show ends with Sounds That Carry Us, a participatory experience based on the contrast between the joy and safety inside Club Juke and the danger outside it. CAAM’s official description frames the show around how Black music carries memory, movement, style and spirit across generations.
