God of War Series Resumes Filming With Dave Bautista as Kratos

All footage with Ryan Hurst, including at least four completed episodes, will be reshot.

Prime Video’s God of War series is set to resume filming in Vancouver with Dave Bautista as Kratos. Wikipedia lists the expected restart as October 26, while Dark Horizons reported a mid-October start.

The restart ends a pause of nearly four months and gives the long-awaited adaptation a new lead for one of the most recognizable characters in video games. It also means a significant portion of the work already completed will be redone, a step that few productions take once episodes are in the can.

How an Injury Stopped the Cameras

Bautista replaces Ryan Hurst, who was cast in January and tore a bicep during a stunt in late June. Filming paused on July 1, per Wikipedia. Dark Horizons reported that the studios said the schedule “simply couldn’t accommodate a year-long wait.”

The sequence of events shows how quickly the situation developed. Hurst joined the project at the start of the year, and a single stunt-related injury in late June brought filming to a halt within days. For a series built around a physically demanding hero, the role leaves little room for a lead who cannot perform action sequences, and the studios chose to recast rather than wait for a lengthy recovery.

Why Four Episodes Are Being Reshot

Godisageek reports that all footage with Hurst, including at least four completed episodes, will be scrapped and reshot, and that Frederick E.O. Toye, who directed the original first two episodes, returns to direct them. Wikipedia adds that the four episodes are being fully reshot because Callum Vinson, who plays Atreus, has aged.

The decision to start over rather than splice in new material reflects the realities of a character-driven story. A lead performance shapes every scene around it, and a change of actor cannot easily be hidden when the figure is on screen throughout. The aging of the young actor adds a second continuity problem, since a child performer can change noticeably in a matter of months, a challenge that productions with young leads often face. Reshooting from the beginning lets the filmmakers present both characters consistently.

A Familiar Presence Steps Into Kratos

Bautista is best known to audiences for playing Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy films and for roles in Dune, and his background in professional wrestling gives him a physical profile suited to the part. The role of Kratos has a distinctive history in games, where the character is a Spartan warrior shaped by rage and regret, and in the more recent entries has been portrayed as a father guiding his son, Atreus, through a perilous journey. Adapting that arc for television places the relationship between the two at the center of the show.

Behind the Camera: Moore and Toye

Ronald D. Moore remains writer, executive producer and showrunner through Tall Ship Productions. The two-season order is unchanged, and both seasons are still planned to shoot back-to-back, with filming expected to wrap April 1, 2027, per Wikipedia. Reports cited by Wikipedia say Vinson and Island Austin (Thrud) will be recast for season 2 because of the three-year time jump.

Moore's presence provides continuity during a disruptive period. He is known for developing the 2004 reboot of Battlestar Galactica and for working on Outlander, series that built large followings through character-focused storytelling. The back-to-back shooting plan is a notable feature of the schedule, since filming two seasons in a single stretch is more efficient than separate productions but leaves less room to absorb delays, which makes the earlier pause more consequential.

Conflicting Reports on the Restart Date

The sources do not agree on exactly when cameras roll again. Wikipedia lists October 26 as the expected date, while Dark Horizons reported a mid-October start, and no official announcement has settled the matter. The difference is small, and both accounts point to a return to production within weeks of one another, but readers should treat the date as approximate until the studios confirm it.

The Challenge of Adapting a Beloved Game

The God of War franchise began on PlayStation 2 in 2005 and was reimagined in 2018 with a more personal story and a new setting rooted in Norse mythology. That version of the series, which many players regard as a high point of the medium, is the foundation for the television project, and expectations are correspondingly high. Any delay or change of lead therefore draws attention from an audience that has followed the character for two decades.

What Remains Unknown

No release date has been set. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television produce the series.

With filming not expected to wrap until April 1, 2027, the series is unlikely to reach viewers in the near term, and post-production will follow once the last scenes are shot. Fans of the games will be watching for the first images of Bautista in costume and for any word on how the production plans to integrate the reshoots into its overall schedule.
