Marvel and Star Wars Cross Over in 2027 With Hope Assembles

Kevin Smith writes and David Marquez draws the first official crossover between the two franchises.

Marvel and Star Wars will cross over next year in Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, the first crossover between the two comic universes. The series launches in January 2027 and marks the 50th anniversary of Star Wars, according to Marvel.com.

The announcement brings together two of the most recognizable properties in popular entertainment under one roof, and it does so in the medium where both franchises have a long shared history. The timing ties the project to a milestone, since the original Star Wars film reached theaters in 1977 and the anniversary falls in 2027.

When a Spell Rewrites the Story

Kevin Smith writes the series and David Marquez draws it. After a reality-altering spell, Marvel heroes witness the events of A New Hope unfold on Earth. The Avengers and Spider-Man team up with Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo and Chewbacca, while Doctor Doom allies with Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire, per Marvel.com.

The device is a familiar one in superhero comics, where magic and altered realities have long served as a way to place unrelated characters in the same story. Here it allows the plot of the first Star Wars film to serve as the backbone of the crossover, with Marvel's heroes entering a conflict whose outcome fans already know. That choice gives readers a clear reference point and leaves room for surprises in how the newcomers change the familiar beats.

The pairing of villains is equally deliberate. Doctor Doom, one of Marvel's most prominent antagonists, is known for scheming and for a belief in his own superiority, qualities that place him easily alongside Darth Vader and the Empire. The alliance sets up opposing sides that mirror each other, with the Avengers and the Rebel heroes on one front and two of fiction's most feared rulers on the other.

The Creative Team Behind the Event

Lucasfilm Publishing Creative Director Michael Siglain said Smith “has written a true love letter to Star Wars,” according to Marvel.com. Smith said, “nobody had to Force my hand!” per ComicBook.com. Alex Ross painted the Alliance Variant cover, which pairs Luke Skywalker and Spider-Man.

Smith is best known as the filmmaker behind Clerks and has written Marvel and DC comics over the years, and his enthusiasm for Star Wars has been a regular feature of his public work. Marquez is an artist whose credits include Ultimate Comics Spider-Man with Miles Morales and the series Naomi, experience that suits a book that must draw both costumed heroes and the vehicles, creatures and settings of a galaxy far away. Ross, a painter famous for the realistic style of Marvels, brings a recognizable look to the covers, and his choice to pair Luke Skywalker with Spider-Man highlights two young heroes who found their paths through extraordinary circumstances.

Five Issues or Six? Reports Differ

Marvel.com describes a six-issue limited series. ComicBook.com, reporting in August, described a five-issue event running from January to May 2027. ComicBook.com also lists Captain America, the Hulk, Thanos, Ultron, Grand Moff Tarkin and Venom among the characters shown in the artwork.

The discrepancy in issue count is worth noting because the two reports come from different points in time. The ComicBook.com account dates to August, while the Marvel.com announcement is the more recent description of the project. Publishers sometimes adjust the length or schedule of a series between early reports and the official solicitation, so readers who plan to follow the series should confirm the final format through Marvel as the January launch approaches.

The characters shown in the artwork give a sense of the scale. Thanos and Ultron represent threats on a cosmic and technological level, Grand Moff Tarkin brings the Empire's chain of command to the story, and Venom adds a more chaotic presence. Together with Captain America and the Hulk, the list indicates that the event draws on both teams of heroes and a wide range of adversaries.

Two Franchises, One Corporate Family

The crossover is possible because both properties now belong to the same company. Disney acquired Marvel in 2009 and Lucasfilm in 2012, and Marvel Comics resumed publishing Star Wars comics in 2015 after the license had spent a period with another publisher. Marvel had also produced the original Star Wars comics beginning in the late 1970s, which means the current series revisits a relationship that dates back to the earliest days of the franchise.

Even with that shared ownership, a direct meeting of the two universes in comics is a notable step. The anniversary gives the publishers a natural occasion for it, and the involvement of Lucasfilm Publishing in the announcement signals that the project has the approval of the people who oversee the Star Wars canon.

What to Expect in January

With the January 2027 launch about two months after the announcement, further details on cover artwork, solicitation information and release dates are likely to follow from Marvel. For readers, the central questions will be how closely the story tracks A New Hope, how it uses its large roster of characters, and how it balances the humor Smith is known for with the adventure the material demands.
